Amanda Engberg completed her thirteen-week internship this fall in the project department as part of her vocational education program in Project and Construction Management at East Sweden Business School. Amanda is currently in her second and final year of studies, set to graduate in June 2025.

During her internship, she worked alongside the Port of Norrköping’s  project managers to gain practical insight into the role of a construction project manager.

“These weeks at the Port of Norrköping have been very interesting. I’ve had the opportunity to participate in the feasibility study for a new staff building, and I’ve attended workshops and planning meetings. I also had the chance to be part of the larger port development project, with the ongoing reconstruction of the Pampusterminal’s quay for heavy goods. Following the extensive stormwater management project in the Öhman Terminal has also been exciting,” says Amanda.

“All the project managers have been open and generous with their knowledge. Their friendliness made me feel comfortable taking an active role, even managing smaller projects on my own.”

Amanda has gained knowledge in project management processes, including steering group meetings, project meetings, and regulatory processes, and she has also managed some smaller projects independently.

“I’ve been involved in planning the upcoming line painting for the Öhman Terminal with the help of surveyors and the responsible project manager. I’ve also managed brush clearing around the Öhman Terminal, booking contractors, and providing project instructions,” Amanda explains.

Amanda says her weeks in the project department have given her a clear picture of a project manager’s work life. The experience has been extremely educational and has provided her with valuable new knowledge. She particularly highlights the complexity of quay construction, both in building new structures and repairing older ones, as well as the challenges involved in water and sewage works. She gained insight into handling permitting processes, sampling, and the requirements for earthworks.

Over the summer and fall, Amanda has spent a total of 23 weeks at Norrköping Port, also working extra as a dock worker during the summer.

“In the future, I see myself employed at Port of Norrköping, in what role remains to be seen.”

“I’ve enjoyed my time in the project department immensely,” Amanda says. “I received a warm welcome and felt at home from day one. All the project managers have been open and willing to share their knowledge. Their friendliness gave me the confidence to take on responsibility and even lead smaller projects on my own. I’ve had the privilege of working both in production and in the office, and I find both environments valuable. In the future, I envision myself working at the Port Norrköping , in what role is yet to be determined, but I don’t want to leave this workplace,” Amanda concludes.
