The construction of the new shunting yard, comissioned by the Swedish Transport Administration close to the port of Norrköping, is progressing according to plan. The new shunting yard is electrified and electric trains will be able to operate the entire route from the Southern main line into to the Pampus Terminal without switching, which improves the possibilities for green and smooth transport. The new shunting yard will be able to receive trains up to 750 meters long and is planned to be put into service at the end of 2024 beginning 2025.

The idea is that in the long term, the new shunting yard will replace the current one that runs through central Norrköping, to make room for Ostlänken and future urban development. Norrköping’s current shunting yard is centrally located in the city near the central station and by moving the freight yard, Norrköping’s inner city is relieved of noise and risks with dangerous goods on rail. Relieving the inner city from freight traffic also facilitates Norrköping’s ambitions for urban development and increased housing construction.

Staffan Gustavsson (photo) is the Swedish Transport Administration’s project manager for the construction of the new shunting yard, and he said that construction has progressed at a good pace since the start in September 2022.

“Today, full production is ongoing at the construction site. The groundworks are practically completed, tracks are being laid, and 40 switches of 44 have been installed. Moving forward, there will be track work involving welding of tracks and switches. Following that, preparatory work for signals and overhead lines remains,” Staffan explained.

“At the new freight yard, there will be a total of 13 tracks spanning a length of 8500 meters. The new shunting yard will have higher capacity than the existing one and will be able to accommodate trains of up to 750 meters long,” Staffan concluded.

The freight yard is scheduled to be operational in the autumn of 2024 and fully operational at the turn of the year 24/25. Starting from the beginning of 2025, railway companies can request capacity at the new freight yard.

2025 will mark the year when a new electrified railway freight yard and the full quay capacity of the Pampus Terminal come into operation.
