The logistics industry is full of people who just happened to end up here – a bit like a spontaneous neighbourhood party inviting everyone who happens to pass by on the street: most turn around at the door, logistics simply isn’t their thing. But for the rest of us, it feels a bit like finding a home. How incredibly exciting and developing logistics is, is quite a well-kept secret out there in society. It’s like being part of a secret order or club… though that feeling rarely “takes real form” – but I can recommend giving it a push!
On June 3rd, I was one of the organizers for this year’s second networking event with the female logistics network Bossa, which was started last year by myself and Klara, who are behind the magazine Dagens Logistik. Around 60 women gathered to visit the logistics city Helsingborg; we had the opportunity to visit Boozt, Ica, and Nowaste Logistics, explore the city’s new innovation center, and listen to several interesting presentations. The evening concluded with mingling at the rooftop terrace at Scandic Oceanhamnen, offering the best view in Helsingborg – it was a wonderful day and evening!
What struck me then, just like at previous meetings, was that one reason it’s so enjoyable to meet and network with other logistics professionals, in this case women, is that we’re damn good at networking! Logisticians are naturally curious and see opportunities and solutions everywhere. We connect and unite, building bridges rather than walls. We appreciate efficient flows, of course when it comes to physical goods, but also when it comes to information. Logistics is closely related to optimization, knowledge sharing, and community. And if you replace the word logistics with a “synonym” like flow, pulse, movement, contact, collaboration, exchange, journey, or freedom, I think more people can understand its charm…
Another thing that struck me up on the rooftop terrace, looking out over Öresund, the ferry terminal, campus, and container port, was how much I love ports – and other logistics hubs. There’s a dynamic in the intersecting flows that makes the port an exciting place that never stops – a place for meetings, exchanges, and openness.
